Install xxkb, then create ~/.xxkbrc:

XXkb.mainwindow.label.foreground: grey

Now arrange xxkb to start automatically with windowmanager, for example put xxkb & to the corresponding section of fluxbox startup script (~/.fluxbox/startup)
